Question:
Hi, My husband is an avid woodworker,he has built alot of different things. However this time he is stumped, but won\'t ask for help. He also won\'t stop and ask for directions. So as the good wife I thopught if I searched the internet I could help him find an answer to his dilemma. He has made a large pond in our back yard, and now would like to build a bridge. He has the bridge started but each time he starts to bend the sides for the bridge it cracks, splits. He has tried soaking the wood, using a green wood. His efforts all lead to the same result. Please if you can help at all I would really appreciate it. He\'s driving himself crazy trying to figure out this one. Thank you for looking into this for us. Sincerely, Robin
Answer:
Bending wood is complicated. We have seen it done by laminating thin strips with glue onto forms and then clamping the assembly until the glue sets. Not an easy task but possible. Steaming the wood is another possibility but requires a steam box large enough to handle the piece. Cutting segments of an arch as we did on our Redwood Arbor #511 is still another method.Good luck with a difficult technique... |
